New Features/ Enhancements

GDPR Inform and Consent

Privacy is important to us! We’ve implemented several new features that will help site managers comply with the new European General Data Privacy Regulation (GDPR):

  • Consent to data policy: site managers can create and update their data policy, and regular users are able to provide or withdraw consent to the data policies.
  • Inform user data usage: site managers can add blocks to explain which personal information is collected on the sign-up page, the settings page, and the edit profile page.
  • Disable user profile fields: site managers can disable and clear the data of default profile fields (such as email address, phone number, etc.). This allows communities to collect as little personal information as possible.
  • Improved delete account and remove personal data feature: the delete account feature of Open Social has been improved by informing users clearly which information is deleted, anonymized, and retained. There are also several technical improvements to make sure it works in a reliably.

Additional Information in User Export

When a list of users is exported you will now also find the number of likes, the number of private messages, and the users’ first and last name included in the export. This is a great way to get a useful overview of user activity in the community. Get ready, set, export!

Inline Form Errors

Inline form errors place any form submission errors in line with the form elements, which improves accessibility and usability. In other words, any accidental errors you make using a form will be highlighted properly (for example, an invalid email address). On a form submission, an alert appears at the top of the page with a list of fields that have errors. Clicking on each item in the list takes you to the specific form element, which is both highlighted and includes an error message in a tooltip.

Unpublishing posts

We’re taking the next step in content management. Site and content managers now have the ability to unpublish posts on Open Social. These posts will no longer be visible in activity streams. This can be especially handy when moderating platforms with a lot of activity and when you don’t necessarily want to delete the posts.

Private message recipients

When you select a recipient for a private message, you now experience an autocomplete functionality similar to when you mention users in posts or comments. You’re able to search for the user by username and displayed name. This feature makes creating private messages quicker and more convenient. And who doesn’t love that?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

User Referencing

We ensured that finding, tagging, mentioning, and selecting users in the platform is more consistent. It wasn’t always easy for members and content managers to reference other users when adding them as an event organizer, changing the author, or adding new members to a group. Now you can find members by searching for username, first name, and last names (wow, choice overload). This makes the experience a lot more user-friendly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unpublished content is made more clear in stream and overviews.

It wasn’t clear for users when the content was unpublished. Previously, the only place that clearly stated that it was unpublished was on the content detail page. We’ve made sure that it’s easy to spot, and can also see it in the stream and the teaser.

Unchanged:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Improved people overview for site managers

Previously, site managers could only edit a users’ settings page by going to the admin people overview. But not anymore! We’ve now added a link to the edit profile page of the user as well, making it easier to access for site managers.

Email layout and text improvements

We’ve made some small but significant changes to the email layouts:

  • The header logo is now slightly larger. The logo was too small for the layout, especially when a square logo was uploaded. The logo now needs to fit within 80x160px but it will automatically resize after you have uploaded it.
  • The footer logo has been removed.

For your information, in the future we want to improve the emails even more by adding additional information about community content to the emails.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Adding the group context of a post

Perhaps you recognize this feeling: you’ve just clicked on a notification link and it’s brought you to an alone standing post, with no context included. We felt your pain and have now ensured that you can also see whether a post was posted on a profile or a group.

Bug Fixes

Several fixes related to deleting an account: When users delete their account, it is now more clear to other users that this user has deleted their account. This is reflected in activity streams and in content, comments and private messages created by that user.

Previously, when a user was deleted, an error message would appear in the private message chat you had with the deleted user. Now we indicate that the thread you’re looking at contains deleted messages from a user who canceled their account.

An apostrophe in usernames: We have now ensured that usernames with an apostrophe display correctly throughout the platform.

Year added to event dates: We added a new date form in Events, which includes the year. This is displayed on teasers and the detail page.

Suggestion list for mentioning at the bottom of a page

When you’re mentioning a user, the list containing the suggestion of names is now displayed on top of the input field if there’s not enough room below (for example, when you mention someone while you’re at the bottom of a page). Also, mobile users are able to scroll through the list if there are more than three suggestions.

Email notification for likes on posts and content contained the wrong link(s): As some of you might have noticed when somebody liked your post, topic, or event the links in the email were incorrect. This has been fixed!

A blocked user no-longer receives email notifications.

Previously, blocked users were still receiving email notifications regarding activity in the community. Now they do not receive these emails anymore.

Landing Page Introduction section - insert link

While creating a link via the editor in the landing page introduction section, the link style according to the theme was not applied. This has been fixed and the link style should now be consistent with the theme style.
